ID SM01 Eastern Idaho High Country (Caribou–Targhee/Upper Snake) Grass Mix

Designed for long-term ground cover and wildlife habitat, this mix provides reliable nesting structure for upland birds, erosion control on exposed sites, and a stable plant community well-suited to snowpack-driven moisture regimes.

Includes (#s/ac): Wheatgrass, Thickspike (1), Wheatgrass, Slender (1.7), Big Bluegrass (VNS) (1), Bluegrass, Sandberg (VNS) (0.8), Wheatgrass, Bluebunch (2). Created January 2026.

This mix focuses on what lasts in Idaho’s high country: native grasses that hold soil, compete well against invasives, and provide dependable habitat year after year.

Why this mix works

  • Adapted to cool summers, long winters, and variable moisture
  • Strong performers on loamy to rocky mountain soils
  • Excellent for large-acreage restoration, grazing deferment, and CRP-style seedings
  • Minimal maintenance once established

Ideal uses

  • Grassland and meadow restoration
  • CRP base or range seedings
  • Upland wildlife habitat
  • Post-disturbance stabilization (fire, construction, overuse)

NRCS practice fit

  • Conservation Cover (327)
  • Prescribed Grazing (528)
