MT SM01 Western Native Forbs-Only Pollinator Mix

Designed for Western MT foothills, mountain valleys, and sage–steppe benches

Where typical wildflower mixes rely on non-native fillers, this formulation focuses on Montana-true species used in NRCS wildlife habitat and monarch–beneficial plantings. Species were selected for Western MT moisture regime, deer-resistance, longevity, and low maintenance, offering landowners a seed mix that performs on dry loam, rocky benches, valley floors, and mountain meadow transition zones.

Onion, Nodding Wild (Pink) (0.1), Milkvetch, Canada (0.35), Balsamroot, Arrowleaf (0.2), Beeplant, Rocky Mountain (0.5), Prairie Clover, White (0.3), Utah Sweetvetch (0.3), Biscuitroot, Nineleaf (0.12), Lupine, Silvery (0.25), Lupine, Bigleaf (0.45), Lupine, silky (0.35), Primrose, Common Evening (0.4). Updated January 2026.

Ideal Uses

  • Monarch & native bee habitat
  • Small acreage projects, ranch headquarters, fencerows, field buffers
  • County / conservation district pollinator programs
  • CRP-adjacent habitat enhancements (non-NRCS spec)
  • Aesthetic native meadow plantings

What Makes It Different

  • Forbs-only – maximizes bloom density & insect production
  • Western MT genetic-fit species – no plains-biased filler species
  • Low-water tolerant – designed for dryland performance
  • Big visual impact – lupines, balsamroot, sweetvetch & primrose deliver showcase color

Establishment Notes

  • Planting Window: Late fall dormant seeding (Nov–Dec) is ideal; spring window March–May when soil is workable
  • Seeding Method: Drill preferred; broadcast + firm packing acceptable
  • Weed Strategy: 1–2 seasons of weed mowdowns (6–8") during establishment; expect full bloom year 2–3

This mix consolidates and replaces a couple of previous mixes:

  • Montana PF Diverse Native Pollinator – Forbs-Only
  • Bee-Preferred Native Species Mix (Western regions only)
